Description

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) comprises all procedures that involve altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons. This is recognized internationally as a violation of human rights, and the health and integrity of girls and women.

The 6th of February of every year has been designated as the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation United Nations.

Initiative for Integrated Community Welfare in Nigeria (IICWIN) – a community-based organization adding values to Nigerian communities by developing high-impact people-focused interventions on health, took time to celebrate this year’s Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation through lecture and awareness creation. Our female students from JS3 and above were part of this value-imparting and mentorship session. The lecture was centred on elimination of female genital mutilation, sex education and gender equality.

According to research, girls who undergo female genital mutilation face short-term complications such as severe pain, shock, excessive bleeding, infections and difficulty in passing urine, as well as long-term consequences for their sexual and reproductive health and mental health. Flowing from all these are reasons why the United Nations strives for its full eradication by 2030, following the spirit of Sustainable Development Goals 5 (Gender Equality).
